Light, Medium or Dark Roast: How to Choose Your Coffee
Share
If you only learn one thing about buying coffee, make it this: roast level changes the flavor in your cup more than almost anything else. The same beans, roasted light or dark, taste like two different coffees. Here is the simple way to pick your side — and the coffees from our own shelves that match it.
Light roast: bright, delicate, full of character
Light roasts are roasted for the shortest time, so the bean's own personality survives — floral, fruity and gently sweet notes, with a brighter acidity. If you drink your coffee black and like tasting where it came from, start here.
Our light roasts: the Blonde Roast Coffee, an easy-drinking light blend, and the Sidama Sunrise, a natural-process Ethiopian coffee with the lively, wine-like brightness the region is famous for. Light roasts shine in pour-over, drip and French press, where nothing covers them up.
Medium roast: smooth, balanced, the crowd-pleaser
Medium is where most coffee drinkers live — and for good reason. The roast adds chocolatey, caramel-like sweetness while keeping the coffee's character in balance. It tastes great black and still holds up with milk.
Our medium roasts: start with the Colombia Coffee, a single origin with the smooth, sweet profile Colombian beans are loved for. Most of our flavored coffees — like Vanilla Hazelnut — are built on a medium base too, and our Original Roast Capsules (K-Cup style pods for Keurig brewers) are a medium roast made for busy mornings. If you're buying for a household with mixed tastes, medium is the safest first bag.
Dark roast: bold, rich, low acidity
Dark roasts go longer and hotter, trading delicate origin notes for deep, smoky, bittersweet richness — and noticeably gentler acidity. This is the roast that stands up to milk, sugar and ice without disappearing.
Our dark roasts: the French Roast Coffee is the boldest cup we sell, and our Cold Brew Coffee is brewed from a dark French roast, which is exactly why it comes out so smooth and chocolatey over ice. Dark roasts are also the right call for espresso drinks and moka pots.
The 10-second chooser
- Drink it black, love delicate flavors? Go light — Blonde or Sidama Sunrise.
- Want one bag everyone will enjoy? Go medium — Colombia.
- Love it strong, with milk or over ice? Go dark — French Roast or Cold Brew.
- Keurig mornings? The Original Roast Capsules, medium and ready in a minute.
One myth to retire while you're here: roast level barely changes caffeine. Pick your roast by flavor, not by strength math.
Every coffee we sell is roasted to order and ships free on every order — no minimum, including Puerto Rico. And if you find your roast, Subscribe & Save brings it monthly at 10% off, so the bag never runs dry.
